Notification of Award: Late March
Teacher: Jon Grant
George Peddle was Australia’s first Windsor chairmaker. He arrived in Tasmania from England in 1874 and made his chairs through to around 1915. Jon Grant, who is also from Tasmania, will teach this class and provide insight into the history of this chair and its maker. Each student will also receive a copy of The Men Who Made the Celebrated Chairs by Denis Lake, which provides a rich backstory to this unique chairmaking experience. This chair is very much in the English style, with modest lines but plenty of challenge in the turning aspects of legs, spindles, and posts. The course is best suited to participants who would not only like to discover the historical aspects of early Australian chairmaking but also want to develop their woodturning skills.
Who should apply: All applicants should identify as historically excluded or under-represented in the field of woodworking.
Type of Class: These are Scholarship Seats in an existing class, which means that a limited number of students will be selected through The Chairmaker’s Toolbox. To learn more read the CMT Class FAQ page.
